Shipping container architecture has revolutionized the world of design and construction, offering innovative and sustainable solutions. These projects not only stand out for their creativity but also for their positive environmental impact and their unique ability to transform spaces.
In this article, we present five amazing projects that have gained worldwide attention and gone viral for their originality, sustainability, and most importantly, for being built with shipping containers.
1. Péniche Student Residence in France

The A’Docks student residence in Le Havre is the first in France to be built from shipping containers. This innovative and experimental architectural project was designed by Cattani Architects Atelier.
A total of eight students and residents participated in a project to promote collective and social living in the university residence. With the support of the Fondation de France, they commissioned a designer to create a common space that included a container and its exterior surroundings.
The result, called “Péniche,” is inspired by the maritime world and the industrial landscapes of the area. This space features a blue roof covering two containers, delineating a terrace with large tables and benches.
2. Starbucks: sustainable coffee in Tukwila

From its beginnings, Starbucks has implemented green initiatives to reduce costs and protect the environment. A clear example of this philosophy is the café in Tukwila (Seattle, USA), built from shipping containers. This sustainable and low-cost architecture reinforces Starbucks’ commitment to sustainability.
The building, designed by the company’s in-house architecture team led by Tony Gale III, is intended as an experimental prototype for potential implementation in future store locations.
3. Maison Container in Lille

The Maison Container project in Lille, designed by Patrick Partouche, showcases the potential of shipping containers for home construction. Using eight modified and insulated 40-foot containers, the house was assembled in just three days. The staggered facade is created by stacking the containers in four pairs, offset by 1.3 meters, resulting in a unique and efficient structure.
4. Kasita by Jeff Wilson

The presence of smart hometainers is gradually becoming a reality around the world. One example of these smart homes is the “curious” case of Jeff Wilson, a man from Austin, Texas, who obtained a shipping container and adapted it to create Kasita, a smart container home designed to allow living in the city, open fields, or even in his own backyard.
This container home, like the hometainers from Dōmad, features defined spaces such as a kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom, as well as various technological amenities including electric control, climate control, audio, security, and more.
5. Stadium 974: innovation at Qatar 2022

Stadium 974 in Qatar was one of the architectural gems of the country and one of the most notable innovations of the 2022 World Cup. Designed by the Spanish firm Fenwick Iribarren, this stadium is the first in the tournament’s history that can be dismantled and reassembled in another location. Built with 974 recycled shipping containers, the stadium has a capacity for 40,000 spectators and represents a significant advancement in shipping container architecture.
During the 2022 World Cup, it hosted a total of 8 matches:
– 11/22: Mexico vs Poland
– 11/24: Portugal vs. Ghana
– 11/26: France vs. Denmark
– 11/28: Brazil vs Switzerland
– 11/30: Poland vs. Argentina
